Pathologist Caroline Muirhead helped police catch her fiancé, Alexander 'Sandy' McKellar, after he confessed to killing a cyclist and burying him. Muirhead alerted authorities by leaving a Red Bull can at the burial site during a visit with McKellar, risking her life as he was carrying a gun.
In 2023, McKellar and his twin brother Robert were convicted in connection with the death of Tony Parsons, who disappeared while cycling in Scotland in 2017. Alexander pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Muirhead's story is featured in the Netflix documentary 'Should I Marry a Murderer?'. Director Josh Allott said he was fascinated by her experience of doing the right thing and how it turned her life upside down.
After going to the police, Muirhead secretly recorded conversations with McKellar. However, justice was not swift, and she felt abandoned by authorities. She rekindled her relationship with McKellar, moved onto his estate, and began using cocaine.
Allott noted that viewers may be surprised by Muirhead's choices but hopes they understand the difficult circumstances she faced, including isolation during Covid and substance abuse.
