A man who fatally struck a grandfather with a single punch after losing a fight outside a pub has been sentenced to a decade behind bars. Nathan Gothard, 37, delivered the blow to David Darke near the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, just days before Christmas last year, causing his skull to fracture, Leicester Crown Court heard.
Gothard was acquitted of murder but found guilty of manslaughter earlier this month after approximately two and a half hours of jury deliberation. He received a 10-year prison term for the offence.
The incident occurred on December 21, 2025, when an altercation broke out near the pub. Gothard, who had been involved in a physical confrontation with another individual, struck Mr Darke, 55, with a single punch. The victim fell to the ground, hitting his head on the pavement, and later died in hospital from a traumatic brain injury.
In a victim impact statement, Mr Darke's family described him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was taken from them in a senseless act of violence. They expressed their devastation at losing him so close to the Christmas season.
Detective Inspector Mark Parish of Leicestershire Police said: 'This was a tragic incident that resulted in the loss of a loved one. Our thoughts remain with David's family and friends. We hope that the sentence brings them some measure of closure.'
Gothard, of Measham, Leicestershire, showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down. He will serve half of his term in custody before being eligible for release on licence.
The case highlights the devastating consequences of a single punch, which can lead to catastrophic injuries and loss of life. Police have urged the public to think twice before resorting to violence, as such actions can have lifelong repercussions for all involved.
