Prince Andrew's spokeswoman has declined to comment on a report that he stayed at Jeffrey Epstein's New York mansion in April 2001, contradicting his previous denial in a BBC Newsnight interview. The Daily Mail uncovered a fax indicating the duke stayed at a 'private address in New York' on 11 April, which sources confirmed was Epstein's £60m home in Manhattan's Upper East Side.
In his infamous Newsnight interview last year, Prince Andrew told Emily Maitlis: 'I wasn't staying there. I may have visited but definitely didn't, definitely, definitely no, no, no activity.' The duke has consistently denied allegations by Virginia Roberts, now Giuffre, that she was trafficked by Epstein to have sex with him three times in 2001.
The Mail's investigation also found flight logs showing Roberts, Epstein, and Ghislaine Maxwell flew from New Jersey to the Caribbean on the evening of 11 April, meaning they were not in New York that night. When asked about this, the duke's spokeswoman said: 'The flight logs are public source information... If the flight logs shows they flew out on 11 April and he was there overnight, they weren't there overnight.'
Pressed on whether the prince planned legal action against the Mail, she replied: 'As I have said, there is no comment from us.' When it was noted that readers would infer she was not denying the stay, she stated: 'They can note what they like. It's no comment.'
Prince Andrew has not spoken to US authorities investigating Epstein's alleged crimes since his November statement expressing regret for his association with Epstein and willingness to assist law enforcement.
