Situated in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay, 92 miles southeast of Washington, DC, Tangier Island is a small landmass barely above sea level. Its 500 residents are engaged in a struggle for the island's survival.
First settled in 1686, the island once boasted over 1,200 inhabitants and served as a staging area for British soldiers during the War of 1812. Today, fishing restrictions, erosion, and rising sea levels have driven most of the younger generation to seek opportunities elsewhere.
The BBC's Franz Strasser visited Tangier Island to document how the remaining islanders are coping with an uncertain future.
