Police Scotland has apologised to a prominent women's rights campaigner after confirming that no crime was committed following a complaint by a trans activist over a broken umbrella.
Susan Smith, co-director of For Women Scotland, was at an event outside the Scottish Parliament in September when a confrontation took place with a counter-protester who was playing loud music. The activist later reported Ms Smith over claims of damage to a rainbow umbrella.
The force said on Friday, November 7, that its review into the incident had concluded, and that no crime had been committed. Police have written to Ms Smith to inform her of the decision, and have also issued an apology.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We have completed our review into this incident and are now satisfied that no crime has been committed. We have written to those involved to inform them of this decision.”
The spokesperson added that a previous invitation for Ms Smith to discuss a recorded police warning had been withdrawn, and that the force “have apologised to the individual”. The review into the policing of the event on September 4 is concluding, with any learning to be shared through the Scottish Police Authority.
