A serving police constable has appeared in court to formally deny allegations that he stole cash, jewellery, and a power tool while performing his duties.
Officer Faces Three Theft Charges
PC Robert Davies, a 49-year-old officer with Warwickshire Police, entered not guilty pleas to three counts of theft during a brief hearing at Birmingham Crown Court. The charges are connected to his work as an exhibits officer. Davies, who has served for 21 years, spoke only to confirm his name and deny the allegations.
The first two charges relate to incidents in November 2023. Davies is accused of stealing items, including cash and jewellery, during or after a drugs raid at a property in Redditch, Worcestershire. The raid, which led to convictions for the householders, recovered cannabis plants, but residents later reported items missing from the search.
A third, separate charge alleges that Davies stole £180 in cash 'belonging to The Crown' in February 2023 in Alcester, Warwickshire, where he resides.
Trial Delayed Until 2028 Due to Backlog
The court heard that Davies's trial will not begin until 30 May 2028, a delay of over four years. His Honour Judge Peter Cooke acknowledged the significant backlog in the court system, telling the officer, "You were probably told beforehand that the trial was a long way off due to the backlog we are facing."
Davies, who was dressed in a light grey sports jacket, white shirt, and blue trousers, was released on bail following the hearing.
Investigation Directed by Police Watchdog
The case was investigated by Warwickshire Police but was conducted under the direction of the Independent Office for Police Conduct's (IOPC) anti-corruption unit. The IOPC confirmed the charges last year, stating they relate to the alleged theft of cash and property in the course of his duties.
The watchdog said the investigation followed a referral by the force itself. The charges are brought contrary to sections one and seven of the Theft Act 1968.
