Graham Platner, the Democratic Senate candidate from Maine, is facing a new controversy after reports emerged that his wife, Amy Gertner, informed his campaign about sexually explicit text messages he sent to several women early in their marriage. This revelation adds to a series of scandals that could jeopardize the party's efforts to unseat incumbent Senator Susan Collins.
Background of the Allegations
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, Gertner disclosed the messages to a campaign staffer during the vetting process in August 2025, shortly after Platner announced his candidacy. The staffer, who left the campaign in October 2025, told The Times that Gertner was concerned the messages could become a political liability. The texts were reportedly exchanged in the spring of 2025, early in the couple's marriage.
Gertner's Statement
In a statement to both outlets, Gertner expressed that she was "deeply hurt" by the invasion of her privacy but defended her husband. She said, "I trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives — the early days of our marriage before any campaign was on our mind." She added that the couple sought counseling and overcame the issue, stating, "Our marriage today is stronger than ever before." Gertner also emphasized, "I know who Graham is. I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t."
Additional Controversies
The WSJ report also alleged that Platner maintains an active account on Kik, a messaging app known for sharing explicit material. Platner's campaign responded that the candidate had deleted the app from his phone but had not deactivated his account. The Independent has reached out to the Platner campaign for comment.
This is not the first controversy for Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oyster farmer. He previously apologized for old social media posts in which he insulted police officers, white rural voters, and made offensive remarks about sexual assault victims. He also covered up a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol, expressing shock upon learning its similarity. Platner has attributed many of his past comments to struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder after his military deployment.
Political Implications
Platner's progressive and populist messaging has resonated with liberal voters hoping to unseat Senator Collins, one of the longest-serving politicians. However, the accumulating scandals, including the latest explicit text allegations, provide ammunition for opponents and could hinder Democratic efforts to expand their Senate majority.
