Man faces prison after 37 dead dogs found in pet care fraud horror
Pet fraudster admits guilt after 37 dead dogs found

A 26-year-old man from Essex is confronting a significant prison sentence after admitting to a series of horrific animal welfare offences and fraud, following the discovery of 37 deceased dogs at a property.

Gruesome Discovery in Billericay

Oaveed Rahman, of Crays Hill, appeared at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, 12th January 2026, where he entered guilty pleas. He admitted one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, a charge which encompasses his behaviour towards 21 dogs and one cat. In a separate but connected legal blow, Rahman also pleaded guilty to 11 distinct counts of fraud by false representation.

The investigation was triggered in May of last year, when officers from Essex Police, accompanied by staff from the RSPCA and Basildon Council, conducted a joint visit to a property in Crays Hill, Billericay. During this visit, they made the harrowing discovery of the remains of 37 dogs.

A Betrayal of Community Trust

Inspector Steve Parry, who leads the Basildon Neighbourhood Policing Team, stated that the case had caused deep concern locally and beyond. "Rahman's treatment of the dogs in his care was abhorrent and he defrauded members of his own community into giving him money to look after them," Inspector Parry said.

He emphasised that the investigation left Rahman with little choice but to admit his crimes, adding, "He has been on remand since his arrest and now faces a real prospect of a prison sentence." Inspector Parry also extended thanks to the public for providing vital information which helped secure the conviction.

Sentencing Awaited

Rahman has been remanded in custody since his arrest and is now awaiting his fate. The court has scheduled his sentencing for 20th February, where more details of the case are expected to be revealed. The judge will then determine the length of his prison term based on the severity of the animal suffering and the calculated financial deception perpetrated against multiple pet owners.

This case highlights a severe breach of trust, where individuals seeking care for their beloved animals were instead defrauded, leading to unimaginable suffering and loss. The joint work of the police, RSPCA, and local council was crucial in bringing the offender to justice.
