Paulina Porizkova on life after supermodel fame: 'Being heard is better than being seen'

Supermodel Paulina Porizkova, 57, has opened up about her experiences with teenage abuse and the shift from being seen to being heard. In a new interview, she reflected on her early days in New York as a teenage model, where she faced objectification and inappropriate behaviour, including an incident on a 1994 chatshow where Howard Stern undressed in front of her.

Porizkova, who became famous at age four after her parents staged a hunger strike to reunite with her, later signed the highest-paid modelling contract in the world. She married rock star Ric Ocasek at 19, but after his death in 2019, she discovered he had secretly cut her out of his will, leaving her nearly penniless.

During the pandemic, Porizkova began posting raw videos of herself crying on Instagram, which she describes as a turning point. 'Being heard is so much better than being seen. It makes you real,' she said. Her candidness about grief, ageing, and vulnerability has resonated with nearly 1 million followers.

Porizkova's new book, 'No Filter', explores her journey from being a 'flat image' to finding her voice. She says the shift has allowed her to discuss important issues like the invisibility of ageing and the power of vulnerability.
