A Pennsylvania couple has been charged with killing their newborn baby inside a hospital maternity room, prosecutors announced. Kevin Cannan, 28, and Yennifer Tavarez-Cepeda, 25, are accused of physically abusing their one-day-old son at Tower Health Reading Hospital in West Reading on May 2, according to the Berks County District Attorney's Office.
Police were called to the hospital after medical staff discovered the infant in medical distress inside a private patient recovery room. The baby boy was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. An investigation led to the arrest of both parents on charges including criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of a child.
Authorities have not released further details about the alleged abuse. The couple is being held without bail pending a preliminary hearing. The case has shocked the community and raised questions about hospital security protocols in maternity wards.
