Obama Reveals Trump's Return Strains Marriage with Michelle
Obama Says Trump Return Strains Marriage with Michelle

Former President Barack Obama has offered a rare and candid glimpse into his marriage, revealing that Donald Trump's return to the White House is causing friction at home. In a new interview with The New Yorker, the 64-year-old admitted that his wife, Michelle, wants him to step back from public life so the couple can enjoy their later years together. However, Obama said he keeps getting pulled back into politics, largely due to Trump's ongoing influence.

Obama on Marital Tension

Obama stated that his inability to walk away from the political arena has become a source of genuine tension in their household. 'It frustrates her,' he explained. 'I'm more forgiving of it; I understand why people feel that way.' He also pushed back against critics who argue he is not doing enough, noting that his level of involvement is unprecedented. 'No other ex-president was the main surrogate for the party for four election cycles after leaving office,' he said. Regarding public calls for him to do more, Obama remarked philosophically, 'The fact that people want me to be doing more is a good sign.'

Obama's Continued Political Activity

Obama, who entered the White House at 47 and left at 55, has remained one of the most active former presidents in modern memory. Just last month, he was the top national figure supporting a Virginia amendment to gerrymander congressional maps, aiming to shift GOP-held seats to Democrats. He also recently appeared alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani during a visit to a childcare center. During the visit to Learning Through Play Pre-K, Obama and Mamdani read the book Alone and Together to preschoolers and led a sing-along of The Wheels on the Bus. After sitting on chairs during the reading, they sat on the floor to act out a key theme from the book. 'Remember the book said, we are strong together,' Obama told the children. 'So you're going to have to all help me get up, because I'm old,' he added, prompting shrieks and laughter from the young attendees.

Democratic Party's Nostalgia for Obama

Other Democrats also hold Obama in high regard. The Democratic Party recently posted a photo of the back of Obama's head with the Easter Bunny on their X account, captioned 'better times at the White House.' The image, taken during Obama's presidency over a decade ago, shows the duo looking at the Washington Monument. However, many noticed the party omitted any mention of Joe Biden, who served as Obama's vice president and later as president from 2021 to 2025. Some voters accused the Democrats of 'erasing' Biden from history. Obama is also set to make another permanent mark later this year when his presidential center and library open in Chicago in June.
