Barack Obama has revealed that Donald Trump's return to the White House has created 'genuine tension' in his marriage to Michelle Obama. In an interview with The New Yorker, the former US president said his continued political involvement, driven in part by Trump's comeback, has frustrated his wife, who had hoped for a quieter life after leaving office.
Obama, 64, acknowledged that his ongoing engagement in politics has caused strain at home. 'It does create genuine tension in our household, and it frustrates her,' he said, adding that he is 'more forgiving' of the situation and understands why people feel the way they do.
After leaving office in 2017 at the age of 55, Obama was expected to step back from public life, but he remains one of the most active former presidents in modern history. He noted that no other ex-president has served as the main surrogate for their party for four election cycles after leaving office.
Despite the tension, Obama continues to make high-profile appearances, including supporting a Virginia amendment on congressional districts and appearing alongside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. During a recent visit to a childcare centre, he read to preschoolers and led a sing-along of The Wheels on the Bus, joking about his age.
