Former President Barack Obama has issued a statement following the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where an armed assailant attempted to reach President Trump and other officials. Obama called on Americans to reject violence in democracy and praised the courage of Secret Service agents.
President Trump, in prepared remarks, also commended law enforcement and urged unity, stating that the event, dedicated to freedom of speech, brought together people from all political backgrounds. He noted the love and coming together he witnessed in the room.
In less formal comments, Trump described the incident as shocking and the shooter as a 'nutjob.' He suggested that the violence was a sign of his effectiveness as president, saying, 'When you are impactful they go after you.'
