A Spanish court has ruled that there is no criminal liability in the car crash that killed former Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva. The incident occurred on July 3 last year on the A-52 motorway in the province of Zamora, northern Spain.
The investigation concluded that the crash was caused by a burst tyre while the brothers were overtaking another vehicle. Their Lamborghini hit a central barrier and burst into flames. The High Court of Justice for Castilla y Leon determined that no criminal proceedings can be brought.
The Court of First Instance in Puebla de Sanabria dismissed the case in November after reviewing expert reports from the Civil Guard's Traffic Unit. The dismissal does not prevent affected parties from bringing a civil action.
Jota, 28, was returning to England for pre-season after a minor procedure, having been advised not to fly. He had just won the Premier League with Liverpool and the Nations League with Portugal. His brother Andre, 25, played for Penafiel in Portugal's second tier.
Jota is survived by his wife Rute Cardoso, whom he married two weeks before his death, and their three children. Liverpool retired his No.20 shirt and continue to pay tribute, including having his sons as mascots at Anfield in December.
