Brooklyn Beckham has publicly confirmed his estrangement from his parents, David and Victoria Beckham, in a lengthy Instagram statement posted late Monday. The 26-year-old accused his family of consistently disrespecting his wife, Nicola Peltz, and attempting to control him throughout his life.
In the statement, Brooklyn claimed that his parents pressured him to sign away rights to the Beckham name, seemingly to prevent Peltz from staking a claim. He described his upbringing in the spotlight as causing 'overwhelming anxiety' and alleged that his mother's 'inappropriate dancing' at his wedding was a source of tension.
The rift, long rumoured in tabloids, escalated after Brooklyn's brother Cruz posted an Instagram story denying that their parents had unfollowed Brooklyn. Brooklyn responded by saying his brothers were 'sent to attack' him on social media and blocked him last summer. He framed the feud as part of a pattern of behind-the-scenes brand management by his parents.
Brooklyn also addressed his non-attendance at David's 50th birthday bash last year, claiming he and Peltz were 'rejected' by his father when they tried to spend quality time with him. He said David was only willing to meet at the party or privately without Peltz, which he called 'a slap in the face'.
David and Victoria Beckham have not yet responded publicly. David was pictured at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday, with the Daily Mail reporting he was 'struggling to put a brave face on'.
