California Governor Gavin Newsom has escalated his attacks on the Trump administration, targeting White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller with a mocking meme. The post, shared by Newsom's press office on X, featured an image of Miller with rainbow sparkles and a nail polish emoji, captioned, 'The guy sitting in the hotel armchair wants you to defend the homeland. Slay queen!'
The retort came after Miller urged Americans to join the Department of Homeland Security, writing, 'Sign up to become a homeland defender.' Newsom's response echoed a May Democratic Party post that tagged Miller and featured an empty hotel-room chair.
Newsom has a history of ridiculing President Donald Trump, including a recent jab about an escalator mishap at the United Nations. His press office posted, 'Dozy Don was defeated by the escalator, poor guy!' The UN later suggested a videographer may have triggered the safety stop.
On Wednesday, Newsom's office criticised Trump for continuing construction on a $200 million White House ballroom during a government shutdown. They shared an AI-generated image of Trump as Marie Antoinette, with the caption, 'Trump 'Marie Antoinette' says, 'no health care for you peasants, but a ballroom for the queen!''
The ballroom project, funded independently of the 2026 fiscal year appropriations, has drawn criticism from Democrats who argue it prioritises luxury over essential services. Newsom's office posted the image multiple times, adding, 'If the peasants are poor, maybe they should start a reality show like our queen! Worked out beautifully for her. Now she's rich, and you losers are about to lose your health care!'
