Netflix's 'The Crash' Sparks Interest in Other True Crime Docs on Mackenzie Shirilla Case

Netflix's latest true crime documentary, The Crash, has quickly become the platform's top film among UK subscribers since its release last week. The film examines the 2022 car crash in Strongsville, Ohio, where 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla drove her boyfriend, Dom, and his friend, Davion, into a brick building at 100 miles per hour, killing both passengers. Initially believed to be a tragic accident, the case was later revealed to be intentional.

Viewers have described the documentary as 'gut wrenching' and 'the most uncomfortable' true crime film they have watched. However, many are discovering that this is not the first time the case has been featured in a documentary. The Shirilla case has appeared in at least two other true crime series.

One such series is Mean Girl Murders, which explores the darker side of female relationships and rivalry. Season 2, episode 7, titled 'Under the influence', focuses on Shirilla. The synopsis explains that 'a tragic accident exposes the dark realities behind the glamorous life of an influencer, revealing the jealousy and rivalry in the quest for online fame.' Viewers have called the series 'insane' and 'unreal'. The episode is available on HBO Max and Discovery+.
