Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has suggested that a foreign government, possibly Israel, could be pressuring Donald Trump to keep the Jeffrey Epstein investigation files private. Speaking on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Greene questioned whether the president was remaining true to his 'America First' agenda and implied that Epstein's extensive communications with former Israeli defence minister Ehud Barak might indicate Epstein was an Israeli intelligence asset.
Greene told host Dana Bash that Trump's focus on foreign policy at the expense of domestic issues such as inflation and healthcare costs amounted to an abandonment of the MAGA movement. 'What the American people voted for with MAGA was to put the American people first,' Greene said, criticising Trump's promotion of H-1B visas and foreign travel.
When pressed by Bash, Greene backed off from directly accusing Israel, saying she was simply questioning whether any foreign government was involved in covering up the Epstein scandal. Bash noted that Greene had mentioned AIPAC in a tweet about the story, making her suspicions 'pretty obvious'.
The controversy over the Epstein files has intensified since the release of new emails showing Trump told author Michael Wolff that he 'knew about the girls'. Trump has denied any knowledge of Epstein's illegal activities. Every Democrat in the House has supported releasing the full Epstein investigation files.
