Labour MP Chris Bryant has called for an independent inquiry into the National Youth Theatre (NYT) following disturbing allegations of sexual abuse and misconduct. The Rhondda MP described the claims as "deeply troubling" and urged the theatre to take immediate action.
Growing Concerns Over Safeguarding
Bryant, who chairs the Commons Standards Committee, expressed serious concerns about the NYT's safeguarding policies. He highlighted that multiple individuals have come forward with allegations spanning several years, suggesting a systemic failure in protecting young performers.
Demands for Transparency
The Labour MP insisted that the NYT must commission an independent investigation to ensure transparency and accountability. "These allegations cannot be swept under the carpet," Bryant stated. "Young people deserve to feel safe when pursuing their passion for the arts."
NYT's Response
The National Youth Theatre has acknowledged the concerns and stated it takes all allegations seriously. A spokesperson said: "We are committed to providing a safe environment for all our members and will cooperate fully with any investigation."
The theatre has faced scrutiny before over its handling of complaints, with critics arguing that more robust measures are needed to prevent abuse in youth arts organisations.
