Embattled federal minister Anika Wells has been ordered to reimburse taxpayers thousands of dollars following a months-long investigation into her travel expenses. On Friday morning, Wells issued an apology for four trips funded by taxpayers that violated regulations governing federal politicians.
Repayment and Apology
The Communications and Sports Minister repaid the taxpayer-funded journeys after being embroiled in a scandal over thousands of dollars in travel expenses. 'These were four cases where I chose what I thought was the more sensible, cheaper option, but those choices were not allowed according to the rules, which I accept and respect,' Wells stated on Friday. 'I accept the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority assessment and I am sorry for making these honest mistakes. I have repaid the money with a penalty loading.'
Details of the Trips
Wells did not specify which trips breached the travel rules, nor did she clarify the total amount repaid. Since December, she has been at the centre of controversy after it emerged she spent $190,000 on a trip to New York to promote the government's contentious social media ban. Additionally, Wells spent $9,000 to fly her husband, Finn McCarthy, to three AFL grand finals, all at taxpayer expense.
Public Absence
The minister has not been seen publicly at any major sporting events since the scandal over taxpayer-funded jaunts broke. Wells attended the minister's ball in 2023 with her husband, but her visibility at such events has since diminished.
