Millie Bright has announced her retirement from international football, bringing an end to a decorated England career that included 88 caps and six goals. The Chelsea centre-back, who captained the Lionesses to the 2023 World Cup final, said she was 'at peace' with the decision and that her priorities had changed.
Bright had already made herself unavailable for the 2025 Euros, citing that she was 'not able to give 100% mentally or physically' after a gruelling treble-winning season with Chelsea. She underwent knee surgery during the summer and described that period as 'probably the hardest moment of my life'.
Speaking on her podcast, Bright said: 'I've been weighing this up for a long time … Having the summer to reflect, fix my knee, and get my head straight really put things into perspective. As you get older, your priorities change. I've been craving family time, time with friends, and time for myself.' She added that watching England's European title defence from afar confirmed her decision felt right.
England manager Sarina Wiegman paid tribute, calling Bright 'an England legend' and a 'true leader'. She praised Bright's impact both on and off the pitch, saying she had made 'such a big contribution to English football'. Bright played every game as England won the Euros in 2022 and later captained the side in the World Cup final due to Leah Williamson's absence.
Bright said she wants her legacy to be that of a winner and a difference maker, adding: 'I want to be remembered as a true Lioness, someone who represented her country in the right way.' She will continue playing for Chelsea.
