Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg has hinted that he possesses additional information regarding the Spygate controversy that has overshadowed his team's preparations for the Championship play-off final. The club was reinstated into the final after an independent disciplinary commission expelled Southampton and imposed a four-point deduction for the 2026/27 season.
Spygate Verdict and Reinstatement
Uncertainty had loomed over Middlesbrough's participation in the Wembley final while awaiting the Spygate verdict. Southampton was found to have breached EFL regulations by spying on Middlesbrough's training session before the semi-final first leg and admitted to multiple instances of spying on other teams. Their appeal on Wednesday was unsuccessful, prompting the club to issue ticket refund details for fans. Meanwhile, Hellberg's side will face Hull City on Sunday at 3:30 PM.
Hellberg's Emotional Response
Speaking to the media on Thursday, Hellberg shared his thoughts on the punishment. "A lot of emotions, it's been a crazy time," he said. "From losing the game to everything being involved, trying to keep your head in the game for what may happen. I'm very happy to be here." He emphasized that the punishment was not his decision, adding, "I talked about my emotions, and I think that's football."
Insider Knowledge Hint
When asked about the intern caught spying, Hellberg stated, "Again, that's a decision for someone else. Everything is not clear... We probably know maybe more than someone else. When that gets forward, everyone will see and understand why."
Preparations for the Final
Hellberg admitted difficulty in gauging his players' mentality after the disruption. "Very difficult to know, to be fair," he said. "After the emotion from the Southampton game, it was very tough. We tried to keep them here, but it's been impossible to train. From yesterday, when it's 100 per cent clear, we could start focusing on the biggest game for most players and coaches."
