Michigan Groom Gets 30 Years for Wedding Night Killing

A Michigan man who married his bride and then fatally ran over his best friend on the same day has been sentenced to a minimum of three decades behind bars. James Shirah, 24, received the sentence Monday in Genesee County court after pleading no contest to second-degree murder and other charges in April.

Wedding Day Tragedy

Shirah and Savanah Collier were married on August 30, 2024, in Flint, Michigan, about an hour's drive northwest of Detroit. The celebration later moved to a house, where an alcohol-fueled argument erupted. Shirah got behind the wheel and struck Terry Taylor Jr., his best friend, with his vehicle. Prosecutors stated that Shirah initially left the scene but returned and struck Taylor again after having time to reflect, as reported by MLive.com.

Court Proceedings

During the sentencing, Judge Khary Hanible addressed Shirah, saying, "Mr. Shirah, I believe that you are not a criminal. You are, however, a killer." Shirah expressed remorse, stating, "The only thing I can do for the rest of my life is express my apology and remorse. ... I will forever be sorry." He will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years.

Victim's Family Reaction

Taylor's cousin, Eren Taylor, spoke before the sentencing, saying, "I hope that they throw the book at you." The victim's family expressed profound grief over the loss of Terry Taylor Jr., whose life was cut short on what should have been a joyous occasion.

Wife's Upcoming Sentencing

Savanah Collier, Shirah's wife, is scheduled to be sentenced later in May for being an accessory to the crime. The case has drawn attention due to the shocking circumstances surrounding the wedding night incident.
