Mets Designate Austin Slater for Assignment After Brief Stint

The New York Mets have designated outfielder Austin Slater for assignment, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman, bringing an abrupt end to his brief tenure with the club. Slater, who signed a major league deal with the Mets at the end of April after being released by the Miami Marlins, struggled to make an impact at Citi Field.

Slater's Performance and Roster Move

In nine games for the Mets, Slater posted a .250/.286/.300 batting line with one RBI in 21 plate appearances. His departure opens up a spot on the active roster for outfield prospect Nick Morabito, as reported by SNY MLB Insider Chelsea Janes. The 23-year-old Morabito has impressed at Triple-A Syracuse this season, hitting .253/.364/.390 with four home runs, six doubles, one triple, and 14 stolen bases in 41 games.

Short-Lived Stint in New York

Slater's time with the Mets mirrors his unremarkable spell with the New York Yankees, who acquired him at the trade deadline last season from the Chicago White Sox. With the Yankees, Slater managed just a .120/.120/.120 slash line over 25 plate appearances before a hamstring injury sidelined him. He began the 2024 season with the Miami Marlins after being released by the Detroit Tigers in spring training, but he was designated for assignment in April and elected free agency after clearing waivers.

Slater did not appear in Monday's 16-7, 12-inning victory over the Washington Nationals, as the Mets have increasingly relied on young talent. Outfielders AJ Ewing, Juan Soto, and Carson Benge have solidified starting roles, while Tyrone Taylor, Brett Baty, and MJ Melendez provide additional depth.
