Kate and Gerry McCann have expressed their disappointment over a new true crime drama about their daughter's disappearance, saying they were not consulted or asked for consent. The couple stated they 'had no involvement whatsoever' in the making of Channel 5's Under Suspicion: Kate McCann, which portrays Madeleine's mother being treated as a suspect during the investigation.
Family Concerns
In a statement released on the same day, the McCanns raised concerns about the 'negative impact' such programmes have on their family. They emphasised that the drama was produced without their input or approval.
Channel 5 Response
A spokesperson for Channel 5 acknowledged the sensitivity of the drama's subject matter but defended the production, stating that the team 'worked carefully to ensure accuracy, restraint and fairness'.
Madeleine McCann was three years old when she vanished from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, southern Portugal, on May 3, 2007. The case has attracted widespread media attention and numerous theories over the years.
