The controversy first erupted in July 2023, when a newspaper report alleged a "top BBC star" had paid a teenager £35,000 for sexually explicit images. Within days, Edwards's wife, Vicky Flind, publicly identified him as the presenter at the centre of the allegations, stating she did so to protect his mental health. Edwards subsequently resigned from the BBC.
The young man at the heart of the case, then aged 21, later gave a detailed interview, describing how he felt manipulated and groomed by the powerful broadcaster. "I felt like he sort of fed on my vulnerability… as he knew I needed the money," he said. "I looked up to this man but he didn't really care about me." He admitted to sending explicit messages and videos, citing Edwards's influential position as a reason he initially felt he could trust him.

In a separate, unconnected investigation, the Metropolitan Police later charged Huw Edwards. In June 2024, he pleaded guilty to making indecent images of children, admitting to possessing 41 illicit photographs on WhatsApp, including seven of the most serious category.
