A passenger brought Manchester Airport to a standstill during a four-hour standoff with police after being denied boarding for allegedly wetting himself. The man, identified online as Jack from Wakefield and said to be in his 40s, arrived at the airport yesterday afternoon for a flight to Jamaica but was deemed unfit to fly by staff who believed he was intoxicated and had wet himself.
Protest Out of Principle
The passenger protested by gridlocking Terminal 2 'out of principle' and live-streamed part of the incident on social media. In an 11-minute video, he ranted: 'My reason was because I peed myself. Literally, I got a taxi, went to the toilet and p****d myself so they didn't let me on the plane... So basically now I've got Terminal 2 on gridlock and I've done it out of principle.'
For four hours, the man stationed himself on the ledge of the upper-level car park at Terminal 2 while police negotiated with him. As he paced the outer ridge, he told police: 'It's three o'clock, I've been on here since I got here and now they reckon they are going to give my money back for my flight. I'm going to get arrested but I don't give a f**k. It's the principle.'
Traffic Chaos Ensues
During the standoff, the airport's drop-off and pick-up forecourts were closed, causing surrounding roads to gridlock. Passengers abandoned taxis and walked to the departure hall. Images show traffic congestion spilling onto the M56, with holidaymakers hauling luggage from taxis on the hard shoulder.
Travellers voiced frustration on social media. One wrote: 'Passengers are having to ditch taxis to make their flights.' Another reported: 'An elderly disabled woman being dropped off at the roundabout of T2 at 11:40 because everyone was told drop off was closed and you had to walk. Why has this taken so long? Absolute shambles.'
Arrest and Reimbursement
Manchester Airport urged passengers to allow extra time and thanked them for patience. Greater Manchester Police later arrested the man on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and a public order offence. Reports claim he was reimbursed over £3,000 for his holiday before ending his protest. The Daily Mail has contacted the airport and police for comment.
This incident follows a partial closure of Manchester Airport weeks earlier after a police chase ended in a crash outside Terminal 2, leaving the driver seriously injured. Passengers faced disruption as the upper forecourt drop-off zone was shut.
