The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has indicated that the investigations into Lord Peter Mandelson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor could take more than a year to reach a conclusion. Both individuals were arrested in February on suspicion of misconduct in public office, linked to their associations with the convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.
Background of the Case
Andrew, who previously served as the UK's special representative for international trade and investment, had his royal titles removed by the King following the allegations. Lord Mandelson was dismissed from his role as UK ambassador to the United States. Both were released under investigation, with Andrew consistently denying any wrongdoing regarding his ties to Epstein.
DPP's Statement
DPP Stephen Parkinson explained that the potential delay is not due to a lack of urgency but rather the complexity and international nature of the cases. He stated, "These are intricate investigations with significant cross-border elements, which inevitably require more time to ensure thoroughness and fairness."
The announcement comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the relationships between high-profile figures and Epstein, who died in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. The investigations are being conducted by the Metropolitan Police, with assistance from international agencies.
