Manchester United are reportedly unhappy with Nicky Butt after he revealed details of a private conversation with head coach Michael Carrick, in which Carrick is said to have admitted he was unsure about continuing in football management. Carrick was appointed as Ruben Amorim's interim successor in January before being handed the permanent role at Old Trafford ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Carrick's rise and current struggles
The 45-year-old guided United to a third-place finish in the Premier League during the second half of last season, earning himself a two-year contract in the process. However, any sense of a fresh start under Carrick has quickly faded this season, with United languishing in 13th place in the table after recording just one win from their opening six matches.
Butt reveals private conversation
During an appearance on his own The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt revealed details of a private conversation with Carrick, in which the former midfielder reportedly expressed doubts about pursuing a career in management following his dismissal from Middlesbrough last year.
"I was with Michael before he got the Man United job and spoke to him about management," Butt said. "He went, 'No it's not for me, it's too much. My head's all over the show. I'd only do it for the big job. The big job is Man United.'"
Club's reaction
According to the Daily Mail, sources at Old Trafford are believed to be bemused by Butt's comments and have questioned why the information was not disclosed last season.
