A 62-year-old man has been arrested by Sussex Police after allegedly performing Nazi salutes at a Green Party rally in Hastings. The incident occurred on Thursday during an event addressed by Zack Polanski, the party's leader. Polanski is the only Jewish leader of a political party in the United Kingdom.
Disruption at the Rally
The rally, which was part of the Green Party's campaign activities, was disrupted by a group of agitators. Witnesses reported that several men unfurled flags of Reform UK and St George's Cross, used a megaphone to shout over the speakers, and one individual was seen giving at least three Nazi salutes. The disturbance forced a temporary halt to the proceedings.
Police Response
Sussex Police confirmed that they arrested a 62-year-old man from Hastings on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He remains in custody for questioning. The police have stated that they are treating the incident with the utmost seriousness and are investigating the involvement of any other individuals.
Political Reactions
The Green Party strongly condemned the antisemitic abuse directed at Polanski. A party spokesperson said, 'We utterly condemn the hateful and antisemitic behaviour witnessed at our rally. Zack Polanski is a proud Jewish leader, and such abuse has no place in our society. We thank Sussex Police for their swift action.'
Reform UK also denounced the Nazi salutes, describing them as 'abhorrent.' The party clarified that the individual responsible was not connected to their supporters who were present at the rally displaying Reform UK flags. A Reform UK spokesperson stated, 'We condemn any form of racism and antisemitism. The person who made these gestures is not affiliated with our party.'
Zack Polanski, who has led the Green Party since 2023, expressed his gratitude for the support received and reiterated the party's commitment to standing against hatred. 'We will not be intimidated by such thuggish behaviour,' he said. 'Our campaign for a greener, fairer Britain continues.'
