The first photographs from within the treacherous Maldives cave system where five Italian divers perished have been made public by the organisation that coordinated the expedition. DAN Europe, a diving safety group, has released images depicting the eerie underwater passages where visibility reportedly diminished as rescuers searched for the trapped group more than 60 metres beneath the surface.
Inside the Doomed Cave
Sharing the pictures on Instagram, the diving organisation commented: 'Light penetrates the first section of the cave before the system plunges into darkness.' The photos reveal the stark transition from illuminated entryways to the pitch-black depths that proved fatal for the divers.
This is a developing story, and further details are anticipated as investigations continue into the incident that claimed the lives of five experienced Italian divers.
