Five members of Harry Maguire's family have publicly criticised England manager Thomas Tuchel for omitting the Manchester United defender from the World Cup squad. The 33-year-old, who has 67 caps, was a key player under previous manager Gareth Southgate but was left out of the 26-man squad for the tournament in North America this summer.
Maguire's mother, Zoe, led the criticism, responding to her son's social media post on Thursday night by calling the decision 'disgraceful' and expressing she was 'absolute disgusted'. His brothers Joe and Laurence also weighed in, with Joe calling it 'the worst decision I’ve ever seen' and Laurence describing it as a 'shambles'.
Maguire's wife, Fern, wrote on Instagram: 'Beyond devastated for you. There was nothing else you could have possibly done to prove your worth. I don’t need to tell you how admired you are, just a shame you were up against a single opinion.' His younger sister, Daisy, added: 'Crazy decision. Keep your head up.'
Maguire himself expressed shock and disappointment on social media, stating he was 'confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had'. He added: 'I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years.'
The defender was also recently handed a 15-month suspended sentence by a Greek court for a 2020 altercation on Mykonos, though his legal team plans to appeal to Greece's supreme court.
