Mackenzie Shirilla's Social Media After Netflix Doc

Netflix's latest true crime documentary, The Crash, has brought renewed attention to the case of Mackenzie Shirilla, a teenager convicted of murder. The film highlights how her social media activity played a pivotal role in the investigation and prosecution.

The Incident and Investigation

In the early hours of July 31, 2002, 17-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving her boyfriend Dom Russo and his friend Davion Flanagan home from a party. Their car crashed into a brick building at approximately 100 miles per hour, killing Russo and Flanagan instantly. Shirilla survived with serious injuries. As police investigated, they uncovered evidence that led to her arrest and conviction for the murders of both victims.

Social Media Presence

Following the crash, Shirilla maintained an active social media presence. She publicly paid tribute to her boyfriend online, posting that he was "the last person to deserve this" and sharing photos of them together on his obituary page, expressing how she missed his "laugh" and "perfect smile."

However, her posts also became critical evidence for the prosecution. Detective Zaki Hazou of the Strongsville Police Department uncovered videos on Shirilla's accounts that appeared to show distracted or reckless driving, including footage of her driving while smoking. Additionally, before her arrest, she shared a TikTok image with the caption: "I'm just one of those girls that can do a lot of drugs and not die." She also posted pictures of herself and friends dressed as corpses for Halloween shortly after the crash.

In the Netflix documentary, a friend claims the costumes were inspired by rapper Playboi Carti, but the victims' families expressed concern over the images.

Current Account Status

After her conviction and sentencing to 15 years to life in prison, Shirilla's social media accounts were hidden or deactivated. While some Facebook and Instagram groups claim to be "Free Mackenzie Shirilla" support pages, there are no active accounts directly linked to her on these platforms.

The Crash is now streaming on Netflix from May 15.
