Richard Keys has claimed that the BBC will soon axe Match of the Day after cancelling Football Focus, and defended presenter Alex Scott. The BBC announced that Football Focus, first broadcast in 1974, will end next month after the current Premier League season concludes.
Scott, who has hosted the show since 2021, revealed she intended to leave in May and had informed the BBC. Keys, now with beIN Sports, argued that her presence is not to blame, posting on X: "It's not Alex Scott's fault Football Focus has folded - it's a sign of the times. MOTD will be next. Viewing habits have changed."
Match of the Day received a new look this season with Mark Chapman, Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan sharing presenting duties after Gary Lineker's departure. Scott noted that digital and on-demand viewing growth has led to declining TV audiences, making the show's format less relevant.
The final Football Focus is due to air over the weekend of May 23, previewing the final round of Premier League fixtures.
