Kate Ferdinand's stepson Tate has candidly revealed that he initially viewed her as a 'problem' when she moved in with his father, former England footballer Rio Ferdinand. In a heartfelt conversation on Kate's podcast, the 18-year-old admitted that he and his older brother Lorenz struggled to accept Kate into their family home after the loss of their mother, Rebecca, to breast cancer in 2015.
Tate's Honest Admission
Tate, now pursuing a football career with Brighton, confessed that his feelings shifted from excitement to resentment as Kate became a permanent fixture. He said, 'When you were actually moving in, I started to think, "There's a problem here." One side of me was excited, but the other half was fuming, thinking, "Who's this random taking over my mum's spot?"' He admitted to telling schoolmates that Kate was his auntie, avoiding calling her a stepmother.
Blended Family Challenges
Kate, 35, acknowledged the difficulties, stating, 'There's been a lot of crisis talks over the years.' Rio, 47, also reflected on the challenges, saying he would not wish a blended family on his daughter Tia due to the drama they endured. However, he conceded that he would support her if she chose that path. The family, which includes Rio's three older children and two younger ones with Kate, has now reached a harmonious place.
Tate also revealed that he and Lorenz initially resented the idea of Rio and Kate having children together, joking about locking the baby in a room. But he admitted, 'I never thought I'd love Cree and Shae the way we do now. It's normal.' The family's honest discussions highlight the complexities of blending families after loss.
