The Newport Beach Police Department in California announced on Wednesday that it has concluded its investigation into allegations against Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey, finding no evidence of criminal activity. The department stated it conducted a 'thorough and exhaustive examination' but was 'unable to corroborate any criminal activity'.
The investigation was launched in November after an anonymous social media post alleged that Giddey, now 21, had an improper relationship with a minor. The post, which has since been deleted, claimed a girl seen with the Australian in videos and photos was a high school junior at the time. Giddey turned 21 in October.
The NBA also initiated its own probe, but Commissioner Adam Silver said last month that the league's investigation would take a backseat to the criminal inquiry. The league has not yet commented on the police closure. Giddey and the Thunder have also remained silent on the matter.
Throughout the investigations, Giddey continued to play, receiving cheers at home and jeers on the road. He is averaging 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the Thunder, who hold a 27-13 record, second-best in the Western Conference. Giddey was the sixth overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft and was named to the All-Rookie second team in his debut season.
