Tributes have been paid to Douglas Shepp McCain, the adopted son of the late US senator John McCain, who has died at the age of 66. The former Navy pilot passed away on Wednesday, his family announced, though the cause of death has not been disclosed.
His stepsister Meghan McCain, a political commentator and former co-host of The View, expressed her sorrow on X, writing: 'He was a truly wonderful, joyful man who supported me throughout my life. He brought humour, fun and great conversation to every room.' She added that her prayers were with his wife Ashley and their children Caroline and Shepp.
Douglas grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and studied Systems Engineering at the University of Virginia, where he met his wife. He later served six years as a Navy pilot flying A-6 Intruders before embarking on a long career with American Airlines.
His online obituary described him as a 'loving father' to Caroline and Douglas Jr., and noted his joy at becoming a grandfather. It said: 'Doug will be remembered for his generous heart, his loyal friendships, and his unwavering love for his family.'
Douglas was the biological son of Alasdair Swanson and Carol Shepp McCain, but was adopted by John McCain in 1966. In a 2018 documentary, he described his upbringing as 'different' but said he maintained good relationships with his stepmother Cindy and half-siblings.
The McCain Institute paid tribute, sharing an image of Douglas with his father and calling him a 'patriot'. Senator John McCain died in 2018 aged 81 after a battle with brain cancer.
