Jimmy White Fires Back at Critic David Gilbert Over World Seniors Row
Jimmy White Tells Snooker Star 'Get a Life' in Seniors Row

Snooker legend Jimmy White has told critics like David Gilbert to "get a life" after Gilbert claimed the World Seniors Championship has no place at the Crucible. Gilbert made the controversial suggestion, insisting the Sheffield venue ought to be kept exclusively for the World Snooker Championship.

White Defends Senior Circuit

White, 64, holds a record four senior world titles and has been a mainstay on the veterans' circuit for more than a decade. He is also hugely respected within the snooker world despite never winning a world title. His voice carries weight as he took exception to Gilbert's assertion this week. Gilbert, known as 'The Farmer', suggested the sport's seasoned veterans do not deserve their spot at the Crucible for their own global showpiece.

Gilbert recently described the Crucible as "a special place" and expressed his delight that the World Snooker Championship would remain at the iconic venue under a new long-term deal. The World Snooker Tour has agreed to keep the championship at the Crucible until at least 2045, with the option to extend that agreement to 2050.

Gilbert's Controversial Comments

Nevertheless, Gilbert is firmly opposed to any other competition, including the World Seniors, taking place at the hallowed theatre. In doing so, he believes it will preserve the prestige of the main event. "I hate that they play the Seniors there. I think that's shocking," said Gilbert, per Metro. "The only people that should play at the Crucible are people that go through this qualifying school or a top 16 professional. It's not for hacking around in exhibitions. It's the Mecca of snooker. I've played all around the world, in Saudi and that, but to me they're absolutely boring and rubbish."

Gilbert added: "I'm old, you see, so I'm not into it all the time, but the Crucible's the one. The aura about the place and how unique it is, you know. You find out, you either sink or swim and that's it, you know what I mean?"

White's Defiant Response

However, White fired back defiantly this week and told Metro: "Get a life! Listen, this is why we're here. Why not? It's a World Championship, the World Seniors. I don't know why people would say that. It don't make any sense."

White bowed out of this year's tournament on Thursday after falling 4-3 to Robert Milkins in the second round. He had wrapped up a 4-1 win over Daniel Ward earlier that day before being eliminated as his bid for a record-breaking fifth title came to nothing.

Gilbert's Eligibility and Record

At 44 years old, Gilbert is eligible to take part in the World Seniors Championship himself. The Farmer competed in this year's World Championship in Sheffield but suffered a first-round exit after a convincing 10-5 defeat to Ding Junhui. Gilbert has taken part in the last eight editions of the World Championship, reaching the semi-finals on two occasions, most recently in 2024. However, four of his last five attempts have ended at the first-round stage. It has also now been five years since he last appeared in a ranking final, which remains his only ranking title, at the 2021 Championship League.
