Roger Sweet, the toy designer best known for creating the iconic character He-Man, has died at the age of 91. His wife, Marlene, confirmed that he passed away on Tuesday morning at a nursing facility following a prolonged battle with dementia, as reported by TMZ.
A Legacy at Mattel
Sweet served as a lead toy designer at Mattel during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1981, he conceived the muscle-bound He-Man character and subsequently developed the expansive fantasy and science-fiction universe known as the Masters of the Universe. The accompanying line of toys debuted in 1982, capturing the imagination of children worldwide.
The creation of He-Man was a strategic response to Mattel's earlier decision not to produce toys based on the Star Wars franchise prior to its 1977 release. After Star Wars achieved monumental success, Mattel sought to rectify this oversight by developing its own genre-inspired action figures. Sweet provided the breakthrough concept that eventually became He-Man.
Health Struggles and Fundraising
Earlier this year, Sweet and his wife launched a GoFundMe campaign to address the mounting costs of his healthcare following his dementia diagnosis. In February, Marlene revealed that he had suffered a serious fall while out walking, which led to a stay in the intensive care unit and the discovery of two brain bleeds. Doctors recommended that he move to a memory care facility to manage his symptoms in a safe, monitored environment.
At the time, Marlene wrote: 'Roger is now nearly 91 years old and sadly has dementia. His illness has continued to progress, and I have done all I can to take care of his needs at home.'
Disputed Origins
While Sweet is widely credited with pitching the He-Man design to Mattel, the character's origins have been disputed. Some former Mattel designers claimed that Sweet's prototypes were inspired by fantasy sketches created by Mark Taylor, a packaging designer at the company. Nonetheless, Sweet's contribution to the toy industry remains significant, and He-Man has become a beloved figure in popular culture.
