Hammer-Wielding Husband Kills Wife, Then Her Family in Florida
Hammer-Wielding Husband Kills Wife and Her Family

Shelby Nealy, a Florida man, brutally murdered his ex-wife, Jaime Ivancic, with a hammer and then killed her adoptive parents and brother in a horrific crime spree to conceal his actions. The truth eventually caught up with the cold-blooded killer, leading to his conviction and death sentence.

Background of the Victims

Jaime Ivancic was adopted by Richard and Laura Ivancic when she was just one year old, alongside her brother Nicholas, then four. Richard and Laura had fostered many children before deciding to give Jaime and Nicholas a permanent home. Jaime married Shelby Nealy, also known as Shelby Svensen, in 2017, and they had two children. She worked from home in Port Richey, Florida, as a telemarketer to be near her children. Her parents lived 10 miles away in Tarpon Springs, Florida, with Nicholas and their three dogs.

The Murder of Jaime

Jaime began questioning her marriage due to frequent arguments and accusations of domestic violence. On 25 January 2018, she told her biological sister during a FaceTime call that she planned to leave Nealy. Shortly after, Nealy killed her by strangulation and then struck her on the head with a hammer. He wrapped her body in a rug and bin bags and buried it two-and-a-half feet deep in the garden. For nearly 12 months, he pretended to be Jaime, sending messages from her phone to her family to cover up the crime.

The Killing Spree

By December 2018, Nealy knew he needed to take further action. He visited his in-laws, claiming Jaime was busy with work. After a week, on 15 December, he attacked Richard in the kitchen with a hammer, striking him at least seven times. When Laura returned from shopping, he killed her with five blows. He hid their bodies in a bedroom. When Nicholas came home, Nealy shared pizza and watched movies with him before bludgeoning him to death with the same hammer in the early hours of 16 December. He also killed the three dogs. Nealy stayed at the property, moving the bodies to different rooms and using bleach, cleaning fluids, and air fresheners to mask the smell. He painted over bloodstains and even the victims' bodies.

Cover-Up and Arrest

Nealy stole jewellery and video games, pawning them, and used Laura's phone to text relatives claiming they were in Texas for a family emergency involving Jaime. He ordered takeaways and left containers around. After a week, he drove his children to Ohio in Laura's SUV. Richard's son from his first marriage requested a welfare check after not hearing from his father for two weeks. On New Year's Day 2019, police found the decomposing bodies at the home. Nealy was tracked to Ohio and arrested on 3 January 2019. He confessed to killing his wife and drew a map to her burial site. He claimed self-defence, saying Jaime attacked him with a knife, but admitted to killing the others to avoid leaving his children without parents.

Trial and Sentencing

In 2023, Nealy pleaded guilty to manslaughter for killing Jaime and to first-degree murder for Richard, Laura, and Nicholas, plus animal cruelty. In July 2025, a jury recommended the death penalty. Despite his lawyers arguing a difficult upbringing and trauma, the judge sentenced him to death in April 2026, stating he had forfeited the right to live. Nealy showed no emotion.
