Greg James and wife hit back at trolls after dog's death

BBC Radio 1 host Greg James and his wife, author Bella Mackie, have hit back at a social media user who criticised them for promoting her new book just days after their dog Barney was put down.

Announcement and tribute

The couple announced the sad news of Barney's death on Instagram, with Greg, 40, posting a tribute. The dog had his own segment on Greg's show, called 'Barney, Are You There?!'

Greg told fans he was 'completely floored' and that he 'can't stop crying'. He wrote: 'I know how loved this unbelievably daft, farty, brilliant dog was, and I adored sharing him with everyone on here. I can't believe our little mate has gone and it's very real and very raw. He was the best.'

Backlash and response

Days later, Bella, 43, shared a promo post for her upcoming book 'Claws Out!', due for release on August 27. She wrote: 'First review is in! It's some very welcome good news at a very sad time…'

A follower replied: 'Too soon before your pup died!!' Bella responded bluntly: 'F**k you.' Greg also replied: 'Our grief and how we deal with it is absolutely nothing to do with you. Or more simply put, what Bella just said.'

Support from fans

Bella then shared a screenshot of the comment, saying: 'Gave me an odd moment of dark comedy actually so thanks for your deranged message I guess?'

Fans rushed to support her, with one asking: 'Who are you telling someone what they can and can't do while grieving?' Another added: 'She's literally crying in her story talking about it. People still have to work and get on with life too. Even if it's s****y.'
