Strictly Come Dancing professional Gorka Marquez has spoken for the first time since leaving the BBC show after a decade, revealing he feels 'better than ever' and sharing what he won't miss about the programme.
The 35-year-old Spanish dancer confirmed his departure in April, saying in a statement: 'I've decided that now is the time to hang up my dance shoes and say goodbye to the popular BBC show. Being part of the show has been so much more than just a professional opportunity, it allowed me to build a career from my passion, find love, start a family, and make lifelong friends.'
On the latest episode of his podcast Lost In Translation with fiancée Gemma Atkinson, the couple addressed fan messages. One listener said they 'can't imagine Strictly without Gorka's presence', to which Marquez responded: 'I know, they're so kind. But I'm fine.' Gemma added: 'In fact he's actually better, he's better than ever.'
Marquez also revealed two aspects of life as a professional dancer he is glad to leave behind. 'My hair will grow now,' he joked, while Atkinson added: 'And his back won't be sore.'
The dancer also dismissed rumours that Atkinson pressured him into leaving. She said: 'It wasn't my decision. Absolutely not.' Marquez interjected: 'She was happy when I did Strictly because she has her own space.' Atkinson noted that '10 years is a good round number.'
Marquez joins a string of professionals who have left the show, including Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk and Michelle Tsiakkas. The programme has announced a new presenting team of Emma Willis, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe, with the first contestant for the 2026 series being EastEnders star Lacey Turner.
