Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, has been hospitalised after being injured in a car accident in New Hampshire over the weekend. The 81-year-old was treated for a fractured thoracic vertebra, cuts, bruises, and injuries to his left arm and lower leg.
According to a statement from his head of security, Michael Ragusa, Giuliani was flagged down by a woman who was the victim of a domestic violence incident on Saturday evening. He immediately rendered assistance, contacted 911, and remained at the scene until responding officers arrived to ensure her safety.
Following this, while travelling on the highway, Giuliani’s vehicle was struck from behind at high speed. He was transported to a nearby trauma centre, where his business partner and medical provider arrived to oversee his care. Ragusa said Giuliani was in “good spirits and recovering tremendously”.
Ragusa also stated that the incident “was not a targeted attack” and urged the public to refrain from spreading unfounded conspiracy theories. Responding to a comment on X, he noted that Giuliani was in a rental car and that no one knew it was him.
Giuliani served as New York City’s mayor from 1994 to 2001 and later became Donald Trump’s lawyer before being disbarred in Washington DC and New York over false statements about the 2020 presidential election. In 2023, a jury ordered him to pay $148.1m to two former election workers from Georgia. He also attracted attention in 2024 after a fall at the Republican national convention.
