Gracie Cochrane, the young actor cast as Ginny Weasley in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter television series, will leave the show after its first season. The role will be recast for subsequent seasons.
Cochrane's family confirmed the decision in a statement to Deadline, citing unforeseen circumstances. 'Her time as part of the Harry Potter world has been truly wonderful, and she is deeply grateful to Lucy Bevan and the entire production team,' the statement read.
HBO expressed support for Cochrane's departure, saying: 'We support Gracie Cochrane and her family’s decision not to return for the next season... and we are grateful for her work on season one.'
Cochrane was announced as Ginny in August 2025 alongside other Weasley cast members: Alastair Stout as Ron, Tristan and Gabriel Harland as Fred and George, and Ruari Spooner as Percy. The actor for eldest sibling Bill has yet to be revealed.
The series, based on J.K. Rowling's books, was renewed for a second season earlier this month. Production on season two is expected to begin in autumn. The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, premieres on Christmas Day on HBO Max.
