Germany Charges Iranian Agent in Plot Against Jewish Figures
Germany Charges Iranian Agent in Jewish Plot

German prosecutors announced on Thursday that a man arrested last year has been formally charged with espionage and attempted participation in murder. The suspect, identified as Ali S. according to German privacy laws, is accused of gathering intelligence on prominent Jewish figures in Germany at the behest of an Iranian intelligence agency, with the intent to facilitate attacks.

Details of the Charges

The federal prosecutors filed an indictment against Ali S. and an alleged accomplice, Tawab M., at the Hamburg state court on May 7. Ali S., a Danish national, faces charges including acting as an agent for a foreign intelligence service, secret agent activities for sabotage, and attempted participation in murder and arson. Tawab M., an Afghan national, is charged with attempted participation in murder. Both were arrested in Denmark, with Ali S. taken into custody in June and Tawab M. in November of the previous year.

Alleged Targets and Intelligence Operations

Prosecutors allege that Ali S. operated under the direction of Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard, specifically its expeditionary Quds Force. Beginning in early 2025, he was tasked with collecting information on Josef Schuster, head of Germany's Central Council of Jews, and Volker Beck, a former prominent German lawmaker who leads the German-Israeli Society. Additionally, two Jewish grocers in Berlin, whose names were not disclosed, were also targeted.

According to the prosecution, these activities were intended to prepare assassination and arson attacks on German soil. Ali S. conducted reconnaissance at various locations in Berlin and sought accomplices to carry out the attacks. By May 2025, he had made contact with Tawab M., who allegedly agreed to procure a weapon for an unidentified third party and arrange an attempt on Beck's life.

Diplomatic Repercussions

Following Ali S.'s arrest, Germany summoned Iran's ambassador to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin. The Iranian Embassy dismissed the allegations as unfounded and dangerous, rejecting any suggestion of a planned attack on Jewish facilities. The case underscores ongoing tensions between Iran and Western nations over Tehran's alleged support for militant activities abroad.
