British fashion designer Georgina Chapman has left her husband Harvey Weinstein as allegations of sexual assault against the Hollywood producer mount. Chapman, co-founder of the Marchesa fashion label, said her 'heart breaks' for all the women who suffered pain because of him.
Marchesa, launched in 2004—the same year Chapman began her relationship with Weinstein—has been a favourite on the red carpet, worn by stars including Jennifer Lawrence and Nicole Kidman. Weinstein, often seen on the front row at Marchesa shows, reportedly encouraged leading ladies to wear the label.
Now, the scandal is hitting the brand. Celebrity stylist Alex Longmore told Newsbeat: 'If any celebrity is seen wearing Marchesa at the moment, it's almost like they're slightly supporting what's gone on before.' He believes actresses may avoid the label to distance themselves from Weinstein.
American jewellery company Helzberg Diamonds, which was due to launch a Marchesa engagement ring range, has postponed the launch. A statement said: 'The company is not launching the Marchesa brand at this time.' The diamonds remain on sale but without the Marchesa name.
Brand strategist Andi Davids said Marchesa needs to do damage control and make clear that they do not condone Weinstein's behaviour. He added that if it emerges Chapman was unaware of the allegations, people might support her as a potential victim.
