The 35-year-old dancer confirmed this week that he is the latest professional to exit the show, but emphasized that he chose to leave on his own terms, unlike some of his former co-stars. In a statement on social media, Gorka explained that scheduling conflicts between Strictly and Dancing With the Stars Spain led to his decision to step down as a full-time professional. He wrote: "After last year's decision to step down as a full time professional due to scheduling conflicts between Strictly and Dancing With the Stars Spain, I've decided that now is the time to hang up my dance shoes and say goodbye to Strictly Come Dancing."
Gemma's Support
Gemma Atkinson, 41, who is engaged to Gorka, is reportedly supportive of his decision. A source told the Daily Mail: "Gemma won't allow anything like the 'Strictly curse' to happen to their marriage. The curse has split so many families up so the fact Gorka won't be around what has become a pretty colourful show like Strictly would be a relief for any wife." The couple have endured weeks apart during the gruelling filming schedule each year, with Gemma staying in the north for her radio job and their family.
Rumours had circulated about a close friendship between Gorka and fellow professional dancer Jowita Przystal, 31, which the insider dismissed: "There were some unkind whispers that [Gorka's Jowita] friendship had the potential to evolve but that was quickly nipped in the bud and there is nothing to suggest that."

Gorka's departure comes amid a wave of exits from Strictly Come Dancing, as BBC bosses plan to reinvent the series following a year of scandals and the shock departures of presenters Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.
