Gemma Atkinson Hits Back at Trolls Blaming Her for Gorka Marquez's Strictly Exit

Gemma Atkinson has dismissed claims that she was responsible for Gorka Marquez's departure from Strictly Come Dancing. The professional dancer recently confirmed he will not return for the 2026 series after a decade on the BBC show.

Speaking on their Lost In Translation podcast, Gorka described the decision as "bittersweet", adding that "we all have cycles" and that he will continue to watch. In response, Gemma said: "Well, it wasn't my decision, which I'd like to point out for everyone who's messaged me on Instagram, saying, 'You've finally got what you want now'. Absolutely not."

Gorka defended her, saying she was happy when he did Strictly because she had her own space. The actress added: "It was a nice break for me when he was doing it. 10 years is a good round number."

Gorka is the fifth professional to announce his exit, following Karen Hauer, Nadiya Bychkova, Luba Mushtuk and Michelle Tsiakkas. He took a break last year to focus on judging the Spanish version but will remain involved in the Strictly: The Professionals tour.

The couple met during the 2017 series, where Gorka was paired with Alexandra Burke and Gemma danced with Aljaž Škorjanec. Both reached the final, but Joe McFadden and Katya Jones won. They have two children, Mia and Thiago, and got engaged in 2021 but have yet to marry.
