Christopher Kepner, the father of 18-year-old Anna Kepner, accepted her high school diploma on her behalf during a heartfelt ceremony at Temple Christian School in Titusville, Florida, on Sunday. The event took place months after Anna was found dead aboard Carnival Cruise Line's Horizon ship last November, with her 16-year-old stepbrother subsequently charged with her murder.
A Bittersweet Ceremony
As Anna's classmates celebrated their graduation, Christopher Kepner stepped up to receive the diploma, earning a standing ovation from the audience. Speaking to ABC News, he described the experience as "very hard" but expressed that his family felt "a little bit happier for it." The school's valedictorian, Josiah Ray El Aouar, delivered an emotional tribute, saying, "My dear friend, Anna. I'm so heartbroken and distraught that I cannot say these words while looking into your eyes. I miss your smile, your sassiness and your ability to light up a room with your gentle and infectious laugh."
The Tragic Incident
Anna Kepner's body was discovered on the Carnival Horizon as the ship returned to Miami in early November. According to the Justice Department, her stepbrother allegedly sexually assaulted and intentionally killed her. A security source previously told ABC News that her body was found wrapped in a blanket and covered with life vests under a bed. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death as mechanical asphyxiation, where an object or physical force obstructs breathing.
The 16-year-old suspect has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder and aggravated sexual abuse. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. His trial, initially scheduled for June, has been postponed to September, according to reports.
Remembering Anna
Christopher Kepner and his wife, Shauntel Kepner, who is also the mother of the suspect, recently received Anna's yearbook, signed by all her classmates. "We're looking forward to reading what they wrote," he said. Anna's obituary revealed her dreams of becoming a cheerleader for the University of Georgia, serving in the Navy, and working as a K9 police officer. Her friends and family remember her as a joyful person who could light up any room.
