Death in Paradise fans are calling for a new spin-off series centred on Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, played by Don Warrington. The beloved BBC crime drama, which has aired since 2011, has already spawned two spin-offs: Beyond Paradise (2023) and Return to Paradise (2024). Now, viewers are urging the network to explore Selwyn's past as a detective.
On Reddit, one fan wrote: 'I wonder what the communities thoughts are and whether there would ever be enough interest for the BBC to commission a show portraying Selwyn's days as the DI.' Another suggested: 'He's been commissioner for 50 years, each season can be set in that particular decade.' Others proposed a Christmas special or an episode dedicated to an old case.
Don Warrington recently appeared to leave the show in season 14, only to return unexpectedly. He told the i Newspaper: 'That was just the storyline, nothing more. The producers thought it would be interesting to have Selwyn reach some kind of crisis and then, after dealing with it, return.'
The demand comes as the BBC confirmed Death in Paradise has been recommissioned for two more series and Christmas specials. Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, said: 'Death in Paradise is a global phenomenon and we are incredibly proud to have it on the BBC.'
