A family from Newport, South Wales, says their dream holiday to Egypt turned into a nightmare when they discovered their hotel was a filthy construction site. Scott Edward, 36, his wife Katie, and their two children Freddy and Alexandra suffered food poisoning, electric shocks, and poor conditions during their stay at a resort and aqua park in Hurghada.
Arrival and Initial Issues
The family arrived after 18 hours of travel due to delays and transfers. They were immediately moved from their first room because it was filthy and the Wi-Fi didn't work. Scott described the room as having faeces and urine around the toilet, mouldy air conditioning, and broken furniture. Outside, an exposed live fuse box and constant construction noise plagued their stay.
Illness and Injuries
All four family members fell ill, likely from food poisoning, leaving Scott bedridden for most of the trip. He suffered kidney pain for two weeks after returning home due to dehydration. The children couldn't enjoy the play areas or kids club, which were dirty and hazardous. Scott received a painful electric shock from exposed wires in the playground, and his daughter narrowly avoided cutting her foot on broken glass.
Refund and Response
The holiday cost over £3,000, and Scott demanded a full refund. After initially being offered £104, Loveholidays confirmed a full refund, including flights and transfers. A spokesperson said the company was sorry the experience fell short and noted that Scott did not contact them until seven weeks after returning, preventing assistance while abroad. The issues have been escalated with the accommodation provider.
The family says the ordeal has left them stressed and financially strained, with the children now nervous about travelling.
