Southampton could face further sanctions from the Football Association following the 'Spygate' scandal that led to their expulsion from the Championship play-offs. The FA has launched an investigation to determine whether charges should be brought against the club.
FA Investigation Underway
An FA spokesperson confirmed the probe, stating: 'We will now investigate and won't comment further until we have assessed the evidence.' This development comes after an EFL independent disciplinary commission expelled Southampton from the play-offs and deducted four points for next season.
Spying Admissions
Southampton admitted to spying on a training session held by play-off semi-final opponents Middlesbrough earlier this month, as well as sessions by Oxford in December and Ipswich in April. All three incidents occurred after Tonda Eckert was appointed head coach in early December.
Appeal Dismissed
The club's appeal against the commission's sanction was dismissed on Wednesday night. Middlesbrough now replaces Southampton in Saturday's play-off final against Hull City. The FA investigation could lead to additional penalties, including fines or further point deductions.
